Built on Courage, Opportunity, and Family

Every business has a beginning, but some begin with nothing more than courage and the willingness to take a chance.
In 2001, Eduardo Rodriguez was simply trying to build a better life for his family, he took whatever opportunity he could find. That opportunity came in the form of a warehouse job at ABC Plumbing.
He wasn’t a plumber. In fact, he knew nothing about plumbing at the time. His job was stocking the warehouse with plumbing parts—pipes, fittings, and materials that contractors would pick up for their jobs. But day after day, as he organized inventory and handled parts, he began learning the trade in the only way he could: by paying attention and working hard.
Those years in the warehouse quietly laid the foundation for everything that would come next.
After eight years, Eduardo had accumulated enough hours to qualify to take the plumbing license exam—even though he had very little hands-on experience in the field. On his first attempt he didn’t pass. But he refused to give up. In 2008, on his second try, he passed and officially became a licensed plumber—an accomplishment that felt nothing short of miraculous.
Determined to build something of his own, Eduardo stepped into the field and began learning the trade through experience and persistence. Along the way, he met a mentor who would help shape his journey. Scott Stephens took him under his wing and taught him how to complete rough-ins, top-outs, and finals on residential homes. Through that guidance and hands-on experience, Eduardo also learned how to work on larger commercial projects such as gas stations, hotels, and apartment complexes.
With growing knowledge and an unstoppable work ethic, Eduardo began taking on projects of his own. One of his first major projects was plumbing a hotel—an enormous step for someone who had started his career stocking shelves in a warehouse.
One day while driving to that hotel project, Eduardo noticed a sign for John Houston Homes. He had never contacted a home builder before—and had never even sent an email in his life. But something told him to try.
So he went home and wrote the very first email he had ever sent, asking if they needed a plumber.
Thirty minutes later, they replied.
They did.
What seemed like a long shot quickly turned into a life-changing opportunity. But working for a home builder meant plumbing multiple homes at once—not just one project at a time. Realizing the opportunity was bigger than he could manage alone, Eduardo reached out to someone he trusted—his niece.
At the time, Jazmin Rodriguez had just graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting Control Systems, becoming the first person in her family to graduate from college. Encouraged by her father, she joined her uncle to help turn the growing workload into something bigger: a real business.
Together, they built J&S Plumbing from the ground up—combining Eduardo’s experience in the field with Jazmin’s knowledge of business and operations. Having both worked every role—him in the field and her in the office—they built the company with a simple belief: take care of the people who make the business possible.
Over time, the company grew not only as a business but as a family. Many relatives have worked alongside them, making the company feel like an extension of their home. That sense of unity shaped the foundation of the company and continues to guide it today.
The core values of J&S Plumbing remain the same values that built it:
Family. Honesty. Loyalty. Hard Work.
Eduardo Rodriguez’s story is a reminder that success does not always begin with perfect circumstances. Sometimes it begins with determination, sacrifice, and the belief that something greater is possible.
For many members of the Latino community, the American Dream is not simply about opportunity—it is about perseverance, resilience, and the courage to believe in yourself even when the odds are stacked against you.
What started with a man stocking shelves in a warehouse became something far greater: a family business built on resilience, opportunity, and the values that hold families and communities together.
Because sometimes the American Dream doesn’t start with what you know — it starts with the courage to believe in what you can become.
